Costa Rica will be seeing a new casino-resort with the acquisition of Thunderbird Resorts Inc. of a new land in the country. The "Thunderbird Resort Tres Rios" project will be sitting on an estimated 11 hectares of scenic land located in the "under-served" eastern suburbs of San Jose, Costa Rica's capital city. The property acquired by Thunderbird is one of the only available locations zoned for tourism development and is easily accessible through Costa Rica's main East-West highway. Just across the site is Terra Mall, a highly successful "super mall". The Tres Rios project will target the eastern San Jose population of middle and upper-class residents who reside in the sity of La Union and the province of Cartago. Cartago is one of the important tourist destinations in the country, drawing in 1.5 million visitors annually. At present, none of these markets are served by a casino-resort, and Thunderbird will be the pioneer in the field. The hotel-resort will have a luxury hotel, a Las-Vegas style casino, a sophisticated convention center, spa and health club, commercial real estate and a private residential community.
